Sharing a garden

Sharing a garden by email with your household, your neighbours, the participants of a community garden or your tree surgeon, with the role View, Participant, Edit or Tree surgeon, and letting a participant request jobs.

In your garden, choose Share to invite someone. You can do this with every kind of garden: on the map, a vegetable garden or indoors. You choose a role for each person:

Role What they can do
View Sees the map, the plants, the pruning schedule, the log and the points to watch (but not the jobs and prices).
Participant Takes part, e.g. in a community garden: sees the plants, To do and the log, posts updates, reports problems and marks watering and tasks as done. Doesn’t change the plants. Only requests a job and sees the jobs if you allow it.
Edit Sees everything and can add, move and edit plants, beds and crops, mark them as pruned, and writes in the log.
Tree surgeon Sees everything, records pruning, writes in the log and follows up on their own jobs.
Owner (you) Manages the garden and decides who has access.

What each role can do in the log and under To do is explained in To do, log and problems.

Inviting someone

  1. Enter their email address, choose the role and add a message if you like.
  2. Choose Invite. The invitation is sent by email if your own email address is confirmed; otherwise choose Open email or Copy link and send it yourself, e.g. via WhatsApp.
  3. The link works for 30 days. Anyone who doesn’t have an account yet can create one for free via the same link.

For a community garden there’s also a link that lets anyone join as a participant, without inviting each person: see Letting people join.

Managing access

In the same window you can see who has access and whether an invitation is still open, and you can change someone’s role or revoke their access. Anyone you remove loses access to the garden straight away, including the jobs they worked on.

Only you, as the owner, can give someone new access. People with the Edit role (or a participant who is allowed to) can request a job from a tree surgeon who is already linked to the garden, but can’t add a new one.

Good to know

An invitation link works for whoever opens it. If someone forwards it, the notification shows you which account accepted it. Gardens that have been shared with you appear in My gardens, under Shared with me. Want to know what needs doing? Then turn on reminders in that garden: for a shared garden they start off turned off.

Tip

Working with a tree surgeon who’s already in the list? Find them under Tree surgeons and share the garden with them directly.

Letting a participant request jobs

By default, a participant can’t request a job and doesn’t see the garden’s jobs and prices. Should someone be able to, e.g. the person in charge of a school garden? In your garden, choose Share and tick Can request jobs for that participant.

  • Only you, as the owner, turn it on or off. It’s off by default, also for people who join via the community garden link.
  • The participant then sees Request a job, chooses one of the professionals already linked to the garden (they can’t add a new one) and follows up on the garden’s jobs: the messages, the attachments, the prices and the review.
  • If you untick it, the participant no longer sees the jobs. If you give that person a different role, the tick box goes; anyone with the Edit role can request jobs anyway.
