Notifications and email preferences

Notifications in the app and by email, the reminder every morning, the newsletter, tips and reminders, the weekly neighbourhood email, Garden jobs this month, and how to unsubscribe.

Notifications

The bell at the top shows new notifications, for example:

  • someone shares a garden with you, or joins your community garden;
  • someone reports a problem in a garden you’re part of;
  • a professional schedules a job, there’s a new message or an attachment;
  • a customer writes you a review (if you’re a professional);
  • every morning: what needs doing that day (see below).

Under Notifications they are grouped by day. A new notification has a dot: tap it to open it, or choose Mark all as read. If you run Bladwijzer, filter with the Gardens and Admin tabs.

Want them by email as well? Turn on Notifications by email too under Settings.

Every morning: what needs doing

In a garden, under Reminders and sharing, turn on Remind me what needs doing. Every morning from 8 a.m. you then get one notification with what needs doing that day in all your gardens with reminders turned on: watering, tasks, sowing, planting and harvesting. If night frost is expected for plants outdoors, it comes first.

  • With Notifications by email too, the same list also arrives by email.
  • If there’s nothing to do, you get nothing.
  • To turn it off, untick the same box, garden by garden.

More details: Reminders.

Push notifications on your phone

A notification on your phone or computer, even when Bladwijzer isn’t open. You turn them on per device:

  1. Go to Account › Push notifications on this device and choose Turn on push notifications.
  2. Your browser asks whether Bladwijzer may show notifications: choose Allow.
  3. Choose what you want on this device:
Type When
Night frost In the morning, when it will freeze near your garden the next night and a plant can’t take it. Tap it for that garden’s weather.
Watering Which plants need water today. Not for outdoor plants after a good downpour.
Pruning When a pruning period starts, and a week before it ends if the plant hasn’t been pruned yet.
Tasks and work days Sowing, planting and harvesting in your vegetable garden, your own tasks, work days and activities.
Other notifications Everything that also appears under the bell: a shared garden, a job, a message.

Send a test notification shows straight away whether it works. Turn off on this device turns them off again. If you log out, push notifications stop on that device too.

  • The reminders only come for gardens where Remind me what needs doing is on (see above).
  • iPhone or iPad: push notifications only work if you first add Bladwijzer to your home screen (iOS 16.4 or later) and open the app from there.
  • Nothing showing? Check that notifications are allowed for your browser in your phone’s settings, and that Do Not Disturb is off.

Weekly neighbourhood email

Want to know what’s going on near you without checking every day? Once a week, the neighbourhood email lists what’s new from the past week within the distance you choose:

  • It’s a match: listings offering something on your wish list or looking for something among your seeds, and requests for harvest from a food bank or community restaurant (for an organisation, also harvest that gardeners set aside for organisations);
  • the other listings on the noticeboard;
  • upcoming activities (including those of public groups), and work days in community gardens that can be found nearby (that you’re not part of yet);
  • upcoming open gardens: the new ones, and those with an open day in the week after the email (not the ones you’ve already signed up for);
  • new public groups (that you haven’t joined yet);
  • equipment to borrow or hire;
  • open questions from neighbours.

For each item you see the title, the distance, the place and a link. Your own listings, activities, equipment and questions aren’t included, and neither is anything closed, expired, cancelled, paused, reported or hidden by the administrator. If there’s nothing new, you don’t get an email.

To turn it on:

  1. Go to Account › Weekly neighbourhood email.
  2. Tick Send me the neighbourhood email.
  3. Choose around which place: one of your gardens, My location, or search for your town. We store the place rounded to about a kilometre.
  4. Choose within what distance (5, 10, 25 or 50 km) and what’s in it.
  5. Tap Save.

The neighbourhood email arrives at the same time every week (by default on Friday from 8:00), in the language you last used, and at most once a week. Below the form you can see what it would have contained in the past week and when the last one went out. It’s separate from the newsletter: you can get one without the other.

Garden jobs this month

One email a month with what to do in the garden that month, made from the page Garden jobs month by month:

  • the answer in a few sentences (“In November you plant bare-root trees, hedges and fruit trees …”);
  • five to seven jobs for that month, with the challenge of the season;
  • nature this month: what hedgehogs, birds, bees and butterflies are doing, and how you can help them;
  • two or three links to a pruning guide or a recipe for that month, and a button to the full monthly page.

The email for a month arrives on the last Friday of the month before (from 8 am): November’s on the last Friday of October, so you have the weekend to plan. If you turn it on later, you still get the current month’s email until the 7th; after that, the next one. You get at most one email a month, in the language you last used.

To turn it on:

  1. When you sign up: tick Send me “Garden jobs this month”.
  2. Or later under Account › Notifications and email: tick Garden jobs this month and tap Save.

It’s off by default and separate from the newsletter: you can get one without the other.

Unsubscribing

There are three ways:

  1. At the bottom of the newsletter, the tips, the neighbourhood email, Garden jobs this month and every notification there’s an unsubscribe link (Unsubscribe from the newsletter, Unsubscribe from tips and reminders, Unsubscribe from the neighbourhood email, Unsubscribe from “Garden jobs this month” or Stop email notifications). Click it and confirm with one button, without logging in. Next to it, Email preferences lets you turn each kind of email on or off separately, or choose Unsubscribe from everything.
  2. In Gmail, Outlook and Apple Mail there’s often an Unsubscribe button next to the sender of the newsletter, the tips, the neighbourhood email and the notifications. It works straight away; for a notification it only turns off email notifications, for the neighbourhood email only that email, and for Garden jobs this month only that one.
  3. Under Account › Email and notifications: tick or untick the boxes, or choose Unsubscribe from all emails (the neighbourhood email and Garden jobs this month too).

Unsubscribed by mistake? You can turn it back on straight away on the same page. Emails about your account itself (a new password, a confirmation, an invitation) always reach you.

Good to know

The newsletter, the tips, the neighbourhood email and Garden jobs this month are only sent to a confirmed email address.
